We observed hundreds of monarchs resting in our trees (maple and locust) and flying around our property from Sunday, September 13th through Tuesday, September 15th. The largest butterflies were the only thing remaining on Friday, September 18th. We've lived here 7 years, and never seen this before. It was mesmerizing.

My husband said there were approx 500 on Sunday, dwindling by half on
Tuesday. They were roosting on the trees under a shade canopy in our shelter belt, under a large overstory trees and out of the wind. There was very little wind; it was very calm all week. Some south breeze, but not much.

Food sources nearby? No clover, alfalfa or sunflowers except what is in ditches. They were mostly resting, not feeding. Those that were feeding were on our flowers in the yard, as mentioned in prior email.
