Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/20/2009

Number: 200

We have a large tree belt on our farm. There are cedar trees and locust trees. There are 100's of Monarch butterflies there, mostly on the locust trees. Most seemed to be resting. September 20th is the first time we noticed the roost but, due to the set up of our tree belt, they could have been in there longer. I was talking to our neighbor and she mentioned seeing lots of Monarchs right in town earlier (we live three miles out).

There was one pair I noticed that looked like they were breeding. I've not seen that before and do not even know if it is the proper time. This was a spectacular sight that I thoroughly enjoyed for the first time ever. I took pictures if you'd be interested. I was watching for 1 hours and 45 minutes.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 200 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “hundreds.”
