Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/20/2009

Number: 1000

Hundreds if not thousands in my trees this afternoon. Not the first time I've noticed them, a few daily have been coming through for better than a week, but numbers highest today. I think that the weather is suppose to get cooler here this week. I live 2 miles west of Tribune, Kansas. I was mowing the yard and at times the air was thick with monarchs. It's evening now and they are all roosted in my trees. Ive got a lot of trees for western Kansas. Thats where they were at. In the shade or on the shady side of the tree.
My observation time: I was watching for 4 hours.

We had a cold front go through last night (9/20). Wind and light rain. This morning a few were still around but by this afternoon I could find none at all. Just who are the smart ones here? Its going to get colder here and theyre the ones headed to Mexico! Ha!

Summary

Saw thousands Sunday afternoon, 9/20, went out Sunday evening in the dark and took a couple pictures with my phone of monarchs hanging on tree limbs. It was late and dark but from what I could see they were still around. Monday, 9/21, late morning 8:30-9:00 I went out in yard to see if they were still there and could find none. When they actually left Im not sure, but looked today (9/22)cold & windy and still no monarchs.
