(Editor's Note: We are reporting the 2nd roost mentioned below by the observer so that two roosts are documented in Hoxie, Kansas. We are approximately the date of formation of the 2nd roost as September 18th only because that is the date the observer wrote to inform us about it. We do not know the actual date. Finally, we are estimating the location as 39.330N, -100.47 W, which is about 2 miles southwest of the 1st roost. We are estimating a minimum of 200 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “hundreds.”)

First roost
I was spraying a yard in Hoxie, Kansas yesterday, September 17, 2009 and a pine tree was on one side of the driveway full of Monarch Butterflies. Another tree across the driveway was full of butterflies also. They were hanging on the branches. It looked like hundreds of butterflies. It was an awesome sight to see. Tried to take pictures with cell phone but couldn't get it too work. The butterflies were on the north and west side of the trees. Cedar and an American Elm is where they were located. They were still there today (September 18) around 2 p.m.

Second roost

Roosting monarchs were also spotted on another site about 2 miles southwest of this house. They were also on the northwest side of the trees. The temp was in the 70's and the wind was pretty quiet. There were not as many clusters at the 2nd site as the first place. The homeowner is aware that they are there now since I pointed it out to them. They were so excited and had never seen something like that before.
