Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/18/2009

Number: 1

I recently traveled through Kansas on my way from AZ back to OH. I pulled off at a rest area along US54 at the Cimmaron River 12 miles or so east of Liberal, Kansas. Saw several monarchs flying about the sunflowers near the rest area. Went off exploring a little bit and noticed monarchs collecting on a dead branch of a tree in a small forested area. I would guess there were perhaps a dozen on the branch and probably one to two dozen more fluttering about the other trees in the area. This was about 3pm local time on Friday the 18th of Sept.

Through most of Kansas I was seeing monarchs crossing the road heading south. In the busier sections maybe one monarch per mile (more western KS) and heading east that declined to perhaps one every five miles.

It was east of El Dorado that things seemed to really slow down. Busiest section seemed to be roughly between Liberal and Greensburg.
