Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/22/2009

Number: 1

We never get many hummingbirds. They are viciously territorial, although we have a great many plant food sources and several feeders for them. They also will not share a feeder and will stop feeding to chase another hummer away from a completely different feeder.

This summer we had a total of 5, but we currently are down to
one Rufous. I saw him today.

We did see something this summer that we'd not seen before. A young Rufous was attacked by a mature Rufous (in his territory?)while attempting to feed in a hibiscus. The immature bird wasn't able to fight off the older one and seemed to welcome my husband's intervention by leaning inside his open hand. Sweet.
