I observed two very aggressive, very vocal female Ruby-throated Hummers putting on an elaborate air ballet in an effort to out manuever each other over a feeder hanging in a crabapple tree outside my classroom door. I stood quite near for about 15 minutes while they totally ignored my presence, and bickered on and on, each grabbing a quick sip when possible. At one point the pair zoomed and swooped pretty close to where I was standing, all the while squeaking that high pitched, fussy Hummer chip-chat. They were still at it when I got in my car and drove away. It was about 6:15PM.
