I saw a female ruby-throated hummingbird in the yard of my house in upstate New York around 8 a.m. The outdoor temperature was approximately 42 degrees F. I was standing still and the bird darted past me (only about 10 inches away!), stuck her beak into each of 3 bright orange-red nasturtium blossoms, then darted away.
