Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/23/2009

Number: 1

Today is the midpoint for the migration (based on tagging records for this latitude - 38:57:46N 95:15:19W) and judging on the numbers of monarchs reported in the area, the numbers seen and tagged at the tagging event at the wetlands last Saturday and the relatively small number of monarchs coming to the flowers at the entrance to Monarch Watch and to our garden, this migration is one of the smallest in the last 18 years.

But, there is some hope - late larvae. It seems that eggs and larvae have been found in many locations much later than usual. Unfortunately, the probability of making it to Mexico diminishes with each day as the season progresses (as shown by recoveries sorted by latitude and date) but some do and every monarch on the move this year seems to be important.
