Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/25/2009

Number: 1

Starting in early August it was not unsual to see 1-4 monarchs daily getting nectar and laying eggs on our tropical milkweed. I have enjoyed watching the caterpillars grow and have brought about 75 in the house to complete their metamorphosis. Three dozen butterflies were used for a public release during a nearby dedication. Now,the monarchs are focused on our tithonia torch flowers and are not interested in the milkweed, of course. The past two days during a very short period of observation time each day, we observed 13 monarchs on our flowers; 8 one day, 5 the next. Most of the last of our caterpillars are now pupating in our indoor sanctuary. We have observed three small caterpillars still on the milkweed as of 09/24/09. My observation time: I was watching for ___ hours and __ minutes.
