Two weeks ago, I had approximately 50 hummingbirds at my 4 feeders. Black-chinned and Ruby-throated are the two species that appear through the summer here. Mainly Black-chinned. The Ruby-throated hummingbird population began increasing three wks ago. When I observed, on 9/24/09, there were fewer than 15 hummingbirds visiting the feeders during a 15 minute period. We had experienced a cool front that wk and it definitely moved many of the hummers on towards the south. Bulverde is near San Antonio. If I leave a feeder up in a protected area, like my deck, I usually will have 3-5 hummers throughout the winter. I take down all but one feeder prior to the first hard cold front so the hummingbirds will naturally move on south. There are always a few straglers that hang around every year. I've spoken to other birders in the area and they have experienced the same thing.
