Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/29/2009

Number: 1

I had two hummingbirds living in our yard all of this summer and last summer. A male and a female. A third one came in both summers and the fight was on. As it is the male and female seem to fight over the feeder and go dive bombing through my front veranda. Even while we are sitting out there with our huge black dog, they will come and feed within tree feet of us. Amazing.

Our home is literally in the middle of a stand of oak trees - they took out enough trees for a yard and the house and that is all - no lawn. When coming in to feed and flying out, they swoop down only feet above the ground and up to the feeder or trees. They liked perching on the dead branches.

Anyway, they both seemed to disappear for a week at the beginning of September and then the female reappeared. It was wonderful watching her feed at her leisure. I could see her tongue darting in and out as she swallowed and could even see the movement at her throat.

One day I thought she better be on her way before it gets cold and the next day she was gone - either Sept. 17 or 18.
We had a really rainy summer. It got hot at the end of August and we had a beautiful summer in September.
