Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/29/2009

Number: 1

I have had an abundance of Monarchs in my garden the last two weeks. They range from bright new butterflies to very faded old ones -- but, the common theme is they are nectaring and laying. The bonus for me is that the wasps have disappeared so the caterpillars are free to roam my garden, eat to their heart's content, and then turn into a chrysalis, and ultimately hatch safely. They are everywhere, I am finding them in all sorts of places. Each night when I get home from work, its a "treasure" hunt to try and find a new chrysalis. Some years I have a very poor rate of return, but this year, almost a 100% have hatched successfully, and that makes me excited. I had a lot of food this year, but, they have almost stripped me bare, and I know the peak has not even hit us yet. We will get rain this weekend so that will help put some leaves back on the plants, hopefully. I have an abundance of nectar plants flowering also.
