Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/27/2009

Number: 1

Large numbers of monarchs moving south through Clearville Park (north shore of Lake Erie)towards roosts at Rondeau Provincial Park and Point Pelee National Park on Sunday September 27th. Conditions sunny 70 deg F. Estimate 250 per hour. Many were seen roosting in trees at Clearville Park at the end of the day. On Monday and Tuesday Sept 28, 29 heavy wind and rain storms occurred. Some dead butterflies observed in leaf litter under trees after storms had passed. Migration picked up again on Wed Sept 30. Conditions sunny 63 deg F. In the afternoon estimate 100 per hour moving south. This slowed to a trickle (less than 5 per hour) on Thursday October 1. Conditions sunny 58 deg F. The weather has turned much colder and cloudy so remaining butterflies will be challenged in their journey south. I will continue to monitor and report further sightings. My observation time: I was watching for 3 hours and 0 minutes.
