Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/01/2009

Number: 200

Saw hundreds of Monarchs roosting in small trees just off the Concho River. At 9:12 A.M. (Oct.2) a breeze shook the trees and the butterflies took flight resembling a bat flight from a cave. Thrilling! My observation time: I was watching for 30 minutes.

Editor's note: This roost was reported the morning of October 2nd, so we are assuming the roost formed the night of October 1st. We are estimating a minimum of 200 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “hundreds.”
