Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/03/2009

Number: 1

After several cool fronts and some spells of almost rain, many of the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in this area along the mid-coast of Texas have taken the jump either off to the Yucatan or have moved farther down towards Mexico and Central America. At times we've had a dozen, almost always six to ten this week. As I can best calculate it, these are RT's banded (for the first time, not recaptures) per hour by the TPWD bird bander near Victoria (last week was 111 first timers in 8 hours), so work back by the week: 13.9/hr (Sept 21-27), 33.1/hr (S 14-20), 23.7/hr (S 7-13), 26.4/hr (A 31 S 1-6). Peaked Sept 14-16 in our backyard also with arrival of cold front.
