Tulips PLANTED

Date: 10/02/2009

Number: 1

Before the Benjamin Rush 4th graders planted our tulip bulbs, we observed the bulbs and cut 7 of them up to look at the interior. We are keeping all of our tulip information in our science journals. Also, before planting, the class estimated and weighed our tulip bulbs using balances and gram pieces. Then we were ready to plant.(gloves, spades, shovels, etc.) After looking at the rubric for planting, the 4th grade students walked around the school to try to find the perfect spot to plant our tulips. Because the back of our school ground is a wetland, the class had to go to the front of the school. After looking at sidewalks, concrete, and measuring 15 feet from the school, we decide on the front part of the school by our school's parking lot. The sun exposure was great, the soil was healthy (many earthworms),and everything else seemed good. The only challenge we had was we had to place the bulbs closer together so they wouldn't be mowed. Another challenge was the deer that live nearby. After planting, my husband helped us put a screen over the tulips,so they would be protected. We covered the screen with mulch and watered the bulbs. We have name flags to mark the spots. Now we will continue to post questions and ideas about the tulips until spring.
