Today Meg and I decided to go canoeing at Falls Lake hoping to see some remaining shorebirds. We launched at the boat launch on Redwood Road and paddled against a strong southwestern wind across the lake and landed at the old railroad trestle. Very quickly we started seeing Monarchs flying up then across the lake heading southwest. Between 12:30 pm and 2:30 PM we tallied 60 Monarchs, ended the day at 4:45 with 85 Monarchs! Given the flyways for Monarchs in NC are clearly either along the coast or across the mountains I think 85 makes it an exceptional day in the Piedmont!
