Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/06/2009

Number: 1

Still have about 25 Ruby throats at my 8 feeders hanging around my back porch, plus there is one that "rules" my kitchen window feeder. The numbers have dropped off from an estimated 50-60 in mid-September. I'm filling their feeders at about 3/day compared to filling all feeders every day a few weeks ago.
It's interesting to see them "sparring" more through the middle of the day, with their bodies arched in, tails flared and how two of them will then zip down to about 6-12 inches above the ground until flying back up and go their separate ways and I've seen one return to one of it's favorite perching limbs closer to the feeders. Love to watch their red throats as they are constantly looking around and up, while chattering away. They also will preen (sp?) their feathers and wipe their beaks on the limb. Beautiful tiny dominators of the sky!!
