Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/07/2009

Number: 20000

500-536 Rio Concho Dr, San Angelo, TX 76903, USA in the area of the park Gazebo. For 200 ft to 100 yards either side, the trees were lined fairly heavily with the resting Monarchs in the lower branches'leaves.

Time of observation: 10/7/2009 from 9:10AM thru 10:50AM. At 10:30 AM, many were flapping their wings as if to work the soreness out before launching. As we left, dozens could be seen in any direction. In all about 20 to 30 trees had these overnight guests. I estimate the number in the 10s of thousands.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 20000 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “tens of thousands.”
