Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/09/2009

Number: 1

Several Anna's (females, males, and immature males) are still hanging out in the garden. They regularly come to the feeders but also visit the few flowers still in bloom (honeysuckle, hydrangea) and hunt for bugs among the shrubs and vines. Soon there will be winter-flowering cherry and viburnum blossoms for them to feed on. Unlike the wasps, they do not appear to suck sweet juice from overripe grapes.
(The rufous hummingbirds left last month. I photographed the last of them on 19 September.)
