Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/09/2009

Number: 1

Observed several hundred monarchs throughout the day ahead of a fast moving cold front. Strong NW winds were helpful in their southern trek. Air temps dropped 15-20 degrees behind the front.
Today I believe will be the last of any sightings for this years migration. Over the period of this past week I would estimate counting 500+ monarchs. Many stopped and fed on some ragweed nectar, and spent the night for much needed rest.
This week is one that I will remember for a long time to come. I ponder though on how much of the monarchs winter habitat has been removed due to mankinds desire to build larger homes. My observation time: I was watching for 6 days.
