Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 07/19/2009

Number: 1

At 11:59 a.m., I photographed a very tired male Monarch that kept fluttering near my butterfly garden. He landed in a shaded area of the lawn near the butterfly garden. He was very still and appeared to be weak.

When I approached, he fluttered to a low shaded leaf of a nearby oak tree and rested about two feet off the ground. I was able to photograph him a few times to be sure of the identification and sex later.

I kind of herded him toward the nectar plants in the butterfly garden. He sipped in the sun from a blossom of a lantana; then, he seemed very energetic. He fluttered and fed all over the bush. He flew off toward the north five minutes later, at 12:04 p.m. My observation time: I was watching for five minutes.
