Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/09/2009

Number: 1

On Friday, 10/9, a storm front was moving in from the west. The day began sunny (70's), with a very strong wind. About 8:30 am we noticed a flurry around the butterfly bush outside our classroom window. There were many painted ladies, skippers, and 12 Monarchs fluttering and nectaring repeatedly. We went out and stood right beside them, but they were busy eating, so didn't fly away! I caught 4 and brought them inside to talk about how they were 'wild' ones (unlike the ones we raised in boxes). We imagined where they had come from. I only had 2 tags left, but we tagged 2.

Today (10/12)it was cloudy and in the 60's, but the Monarchs were back! There were 8 today, but none tagged. We haven't ever had this many visit at once before! My observation time: I was watching for 4 hours.
