Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/14/2009

Number: 1

In the space of around 30 seconds, I spotted 48 monarchs. It was around 3:00 in the afternoon. Most were flying rather high, but a few were low as if looking for nectar. It has been so rainy here (2" alone yesterday) for a week but this afternoon the sun is breaking through. It would seem they have been waiting for the weather to be dry enough to continue their trip. Our building is close to the AR river where I think they roost at night. I have never seen as many at one time as I am seeing now. I went back out an hour later and still saw them, just one after another. Sometimes in a group of 10 or so and sometimes a smaller group of 2 or 3. Of course, some were alone but there was always another close behind. My observation time: I was watching for 30 minutes.
