Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/10/2009

Number: 250

After a long wait, I was finally lucky enough to spot the migrating monarchs on the South Shore of Long Island NY (Jones Beach and Robert Moses Beach). On Saturday (10.10.09) with a strong South West Wind, I spotted about 250 monarchs. After feasting on luscious yellow flowers, they huddled together in the evergreen trees for the night. On Sunday with a strong north/west wind I spotted about 50 monarchs.

I usually see them through the month of September and early October, but this year, there were very few earlier on. My observation time: I was watching for 4 hours and 30 minutes.
