Symbolic Monarchs (Sent)

Date: 10/16/2009

Number: 1

The students are excited to be participating this year in the symbolic migration. We're looking forward to writing to others in the program. We raised about a dozen monarchs in class this year, releasing them in our neighbourhood and in a park along Lake Ontario. We have coneflowers and sedum and butterfly bushes, along with milkweed plus other nectar plants in our garden. There were few sightings of wild monarchs this year. Not sure why - a lot of cloudy days and cool temperatures may be the factor. It wasn't a great summer in our area. Hopefully there will be a safe winter for the many butterflies that make it to Mexico!
