Signs of Fall

Date: 10/19/2009

Number: 1

Upon arising, knowing that there was a chill in the air, checked the thermometer outside At 8AM EST reading of 26 degrees F. Frost on ground, clear air, slight N wind. Freeze oribabky hit many unawares, as it is very early in our season in SC. Temperature rose with the sun and it became obvious that plants in tomato field hit hard, as well as down valley's truck gardens of peppers. Wooly Bear caterpillars in route across highways..where do they go and what for??? Hundreds within a 12 mile ride into town. Crows seen en mass, possibly chasing something, though I was driving, and kind of had to watch the road. Hunting season open in areas, deer seen during day, not sure of the Lunar Feeding cycle. Cold in bones, but it is a good feeling to have cooler weather, it invigorates. Leaves coming down more , but still way off from our "Peak" leaf season, which actually lasts into Nov., however drab. The Canada Geese that I have had down in the fields last two years, have found better feeding grounds down valley(Oolenoy Valley), geese don't do tomatoes much, plus there is no open gound upon which to land. Once they plow under they will come. A gorgeous start to events to unfold with winter.
