Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/19/2009

Number: 1

I drove over to Perdido Beach, Alabama, a tiny community on a bay, near the Gulf of Mexico - about 20 miles west of Pensacola. I stopped at a boat ramp access to the bay to enjoy the view and was surprised to see many monarchs resting on tall weedy bushes with little flowers - probably at least 100 or more butterflies. It was an amazing sight, as we usually only see a few at a time, flying. I am guessing that they were resting before heading out across the water to Mexico. There were other bushes of the same type inland, but the monarchs were only on the ones near the water. Many had their wings open, to soak in the sunlight, I assume, as it was windy and a little chilly. My observation time: I was watching for 15 minutes.
