Symbolic Monarchs (Sent)

Date: 10/23/2009

Number: 1

We raised Monarch Butterflies in out class. We got out caterpillars (larva) in September. We watched them grow as they ate so much milkweed. They shed their skins. They formed the chrysalises over a period of 5 days. We have 13 caterpillars but only 12 turned into chrysalises. One of the butterflies emerged but could not get the fluid to its wings. It died. Eight of the other chrysalises butterflies emerged and we have sent some of them off on their long journey to Mexico. So far the females outnumber the males. We hope that all of them make it to Mexico and survive the winter.
We sent our Symbolic Butterflies out too. We can't wait until the spring to receive some Monarchs from far away places.
