Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/19/2009

Number: 1

Our fifth grade students observed the life cycle changes of 35 monarch butterflies whose eggs were laid outside on our milkweed plants. Twenty-one were female, and fourteen were male. Each monarch was tagged and released to continue its migration to Mexico.
Our last remaining butterfly, a male, emerged from its chrysalis October 12, but had to remain in our classroom for a week due to unusually cold and rainy weather conditions. It was finally released Monday, October 19, on a sunny and clear day.
