Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/11/2009

Number: 1500

October 25
We live among a very mature stand of Eucalyptus trees that date back perhaps 100 year. Some of the trees are more than 100 feet tall. This grove has at times proven to be a stopping off point for Monarchs. This year they are very prolific

The monarchs spend the night in the trees. This is an old eucalyptus grove and the monarchs frequent this location annually. We have not seen them in such large numbers in ten years. Perhaps this is cyclical or their numbers are improving. Time will tell.

I first noticed their arrival about two weeks ago. (10/11 estimated) In the past they seem to linger for two-four weeks and then gradually drift away.

My guess is they number in the 500 to 1500 range. Hard to tell because the trees are very tall and I have not been using binoculars.
