Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/21/2009

Number: 2000

Around 10:00am, October 22, 2009 there were 300 to 500 monarchs in the trees and bushes on our property. The following morning October 23, 2009 the trees and tall grasses were covered with monarchs, 1000s of them. The butterflies were all on the sunny sides of the trees. They remained there the entire day. We are an open area with lots of trees, bushes and grasses, on a large lake, Lake Livingston.

I spotted them on the first morning when they fluttered around the windows and walked around the property finding them on the cedar trees, they were there until that evening when the sun went down. The following morning they were all over the trees and were there until the sun went down. The next day (October 24th)they were gone, only one or two still fluttering around on the grass.

We bought this property in 2005 but are only now building a house so this is my first experience with the monarchs. However each Fall people that I've had working on the property have reported to me that they have observed large numbers of monarchs in the trees there. So, I have been waiting and watching for the monarchs this year and yes we do seem to be a roost/resting spot for them.

I have pictures. My observation time: I was watching for _36__ hours and ___ minutes.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 2000 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “thousands.”
