Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/25/2009

Number: 1

We are on a trip to Panama City Beach. Along the way we stopped at Bald Point State park. We went on a trail within the park and saw some golden rod, but only about 25 Monarchs there. Outside the entrance station, there is a little picnic area and the salt marsh bushes had 75 Monarchs in that area.

Next we stopped at St. George State park which is on a long, thin barrier island. We didn't see any Monarchs until we noticed some golden rod right outside the entrance gate to the park. There was a large patch of flowers there and 100's of Monarchs.

We then headed to St. Joseph Peninsula State park and it was later in the day and we did see Monarchs there, but not too many. So we either didn't find where the Monarchs were nectaring or it may be early in the season yet for them.

Our last stop before heading home was St. Andrews State park in Panama City. We saw lots of Monarchs and many other butterflies here (Gulf Frits, Buckeyes, Long-tailed skippers, two species of Sulphurs and some Skippers). The main area they were in was along the trail by the tuppentine still. Part of the trail is along the Grand Lagoon water area.
