Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/11/2009

Number: 200

Wise Point is the very bottom tip of the Delmarva Peninsula in southern Northahmpton County, Virginia. Monarchs roost each fall in short Virginia Pine trees, "Elaeagnus pungens" shubs (Russian Olive), or in cherry trees. Wind direction and speed determine which side of Wise Point the Monarchs roost. The peak of the Monarch migration on the Delmarva Peninsula is almost always the 2nd to 3rd week in October. On October 11, 2009 the Monarchs started arriving by the hundreds if not thousands, nectaring primarily on Seaside Goldenrod. Each year during this time period Monarchs roost at Wise Point by the hundreds or more! The Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory monitors and tags the Monarch migration from Mid September until the end of October each year.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 200 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “hundreds.”
