Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 11/02/2009

Number: 1

Attaching photo of (unconfirmed by e-Bird as of yet) adult female Rufous Hummingbird at my feeder today, November 2, 2009. My home is in Franklin County, MO, in the New Haven area. This would be first Rufous photographed in Missouri after month of October. Bird arrived at dusk last night and I was unable to identify it. This morning had better opportunity as it visited feeder briefly. (No Ruby-throat has been seen this late in the state since 1902.)

Update at 6 p.m.
The experts at Cornell Lab of Ornithology wrote me that they "have not been able to come to a consensus as to what this is from these photographs." However, they said, "We should clarify that all... of us agree that your hummingbird is NOT a Ruby-throated and is either a Selasphorus (i.e., the genus of Rufous, Broad-tailed, or Allen's) or a Calliope Hummingbird. Any of these western species would be exciting to confirm in Missouri."
