I believe I just saw 4 whooping cranes attached to a group of sand hill cranes, moving south. They were directly over my head and easy to see: a large bunch of brown cranes, 4 white ones in the center of the "V" formation, in protected spots. The were a bit larger. The distinctive cry of the Sand Hill Crane was easily identifiable. 12:30 pm central time. Possibility of those four slightly larger birds being geese? I don't know. They didn't silhouette differently than the cranes, they flew the same wing pattern and rhythm also.
We have ponds and winter wheat. The cranes know this, they count on it.
