We planted our garden on a chilly autumn afternoon. Our class only meets once a week and we had to wait 3 weeks to plant as we have had so much rain here in New Jersey. We are about 45 miles from the ocean, so we are interested to see if that will have an effect on our emergence date. We found small organisms in the soil as we planted. Earthworms, roundworms, beetle larvae, and centipedes are all living with our planted bulbs! We also dissected the bulbs to see what was inside. We found a tiny perfectly formed tulip inside the bulb with leaves, petals, stamens and ovary! Wow, we did not realize there was a complete embryo there! We are a 3rd grade class of gifted students and are looking forward to the arrival of spring!!
