Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 12/06/2009

Number: 1

With Friday and Saturday (December 4-5) overnight temps in low 30 and mid 20s (23 degrees), and not having seen "our green-backed Rufous in a few dayS, we took in all feeders over night and replaced one up closer to the house. We did not see one Saturday and were thinking that the Green-backed Rufous was headed south at last.
Saturday morning, fairly early, about 9:30 "our month-long visitor" (or one just like him) came in to drink and has been back 5-6 times, for up to 5 minutes at a time. It is now 11:45 am and he just left the feeder again.
It has been the same bird today each time because he appears to have a clump of yellow pollen, I presume, on the middle of his upper beak. I guess between the little flylike bugs I see and some still flowering plants in protected areas, AND one hummer feeder, he's thinkin' even with this cold snap it's better than being in Alaska right now.
