Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 01/09/2010

Number: 1

I did go to both Folly (1145-1235) and Patriot's Point (1310-1400) today.  I saw 2 monarchs at mid-Folly (caught & tagged 1) and saw ~15 at NE Folly (tagged 6 & recaptured 4 - 29, 29, 33 & 44 days at large).

At Patriot's I saw 7 monarchs, of which I tagged 4 with no recaptures
- only tagged 7 there, all on Christmas Eve day.

Editor's note:
This observer tagged 233 monarchs at Folly Beach between November 15-December 31, 2009. Of these, 21.5% were recaptured as of February 3rd. This suggests that many of the 233 tagged monarchs had become resident on Folly Beach this winter. Unless additional severe cold occurs, the observer expects to make additional monarch observations along the central South Carolina coast, and primarily at Folly Beach and Patriot’s Point, through early spring 2010. He also anticipates making addition recaptures/recoveries of tagged monarchs, with such recapture incidents providing further insight on longevity of winter residency and survival for wintering monarchs along the central South Carolina coast.
