Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 01/25/2010

Number: 1

Hans Suter and Pat Suter Wildlife Area,
located at corner of Ennis Joslin & Nile Drive
Corpus Christi, TX Nueces County.
Temperature: 68F. Sunny skies. N breeze about 5mph. I was birding about 2pm CST along the boardwalk and a male Monarch flew up from under the boardwalk and looked new and fresh to me.
It alighted on a blooming Eupatorium crucita and closed its wings for awhile. I waited for a few minutes. Then he opened his wings and fluttered a bit and flew to another shrub and rested and then flew up pretty soon and soared about for about 2 minutes. I thought this was pretty early in the year for a Monarch to be here. It could be a local specimen. But I have not observed any at this site since last fall. He was also moving very slowly, too. Other species today were Gulf Fritillary, Southern Dogface, Little Yellow, Fiery Skipper, Great Southern White and Lyside Sulphur.
