I observed 3 monarch caterpillars feeding on my scarlet milkweed leaves AND buds(the only kind of milkweed I seem to be able to grow in sw FL). The smallest was about an inch, the other about an inch and a half, and the 3rd, about 2 inches. I guess I better check every day!
