Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/05/2010

Number: 1

We had a very good population of monarchs that we were observing thru December going into January across the bay on the peninsula to the Lavaca Bay Causeway. On warm, sunny days we'd usually see about 3 to four on a trip along the mile long peninsula. On Dec 19th, we saw 4 monarchs nectaring and 2 fly by, for a total of six. Over at Port O'Connor, nineteen miles to the east of us, on the same day we got an email of 6 to 7 monarchs that afternoon "flirting with the various flowers". We saw monarchs like this until the first week of January when Texas had one hardest freezes in almost twenty years, down to 24 here along the bay and in the teens up to Houston. After that we saw no butterflies until some sulphurs two weeks ago. We have some curassavica with leaves about an inch long that we are watching each day to see if any monarchs can find it. We have a few lantana for nectar in the backyard now.
