We had at least one monarch laying eggs before Christmas and brought caterpillars into the lanai where they formed their chrysalises. One caterpillar emerged perfectly healthy after almost 6 weeks in the chrysalis (after the 11 days of below freezing nights). The second butterfly emerged but did not survive. We found a third caterpillar with 3 sets of antennae and it made a chrysalis that is still green.
We protected two pots of milkweed by placing them (with the chrysalises) in the shed during the freezes. They have survived and are sprouting new leaves. The plants in the garden were destroyed by the freeze but seedlings are starting to emerge.
