In Monterey County there is very little change from last week. With the winter storms, the monarchs are continuing to move around. Please note that even though the numbers are low, I am not finding very many, if any, dead butterflies after the storms. Most butterflies look like they are in very good condition. At the Pacific Grove Sanctuary the butterflies are mostly in the pine tree behind the eucalyptus stand, and this week there were no grounders. At Andrew Molera SP the butterflies are clustering loosely high up in the eucs and seem to be moving around quite a bit. This week's count at Andrew Molera is lower than last week's, but could represent just an undercount as the butterflies are very high in the trees and could be clustering out of my view. I checked the euc stand from all possible angles, too! At the private property site in Big Sur and Plaskett Creek, they are clustering densely and the clusters are relatively close together. I'm seeing fewer loner butterflies in general. The weather during this week's surveys was overcast and cool with light winds on the 28th, and sunny and cool on the 29th.
