The high winds during the storms thoroughly scattered the monarchs. The first set of surveys reported was done immediately following the severe rainy weather. All sites were, of course, quite humid and warmed quickly once the sun came out. At Plaskett Creek and the private property site in Big Sur, the monarchs were scattered in very loose clusters on the south and east sides of the trees. A few small clusters were found in a cypress, rather than a pine at Plaskett. At Andrew Molera, the only monarchs I found were a handful of fliers/grounders on the north end of the eucalyptus stand. The Pacific Grove Sanctuary only had 32 monarchs, a single cluster of 28 and 4 loners. Tama and I checked all the trees in and around the sanctuary, but could not find any more. The second set of surveys was done following the lighter storm system last week. The weather was similar to the week before, humid and warm. Plaskett's numbers have dropped to 57 monarchs scattered on the south sides a Monterey pine and a cypress. I checked other trees in the campground and on the north side of their usually trees, but could not find any others.
