Maple Syrup (FIRST Sap Run)

Date: 03/02/2010

Number: 1

We are Mrs. Winder's fourth grade class from the Fox Meadow School. Yesterday as it started to warm up, we decided to tap our 4 sugar maple trees on our school property. We drilled three to four taps on each tree, tapping four trees in all. Once we made the hole, the sap began to pour out of the spiles. We stuck our fingers under the spile and tasted the sap. It tasted like very sweet sugar water. We were amazed that in 24 hours we collected about 20 gallons of sap. The temperature was about 44 degrees(F) during the day. Tomorrow we will begin to make the actual syrup with pancakes. We will write more tomorrow! By 4W
