All Other Signs of Spring

Sarah Rupert gave me the following information:

- she is seeing flocks of mixed blackbirds - red-winged blackbirds, cowbirds and grackles

- congregations of ducks are gathering in the bay, and include mergansers and also goldeneyes and buffleheads

- the local crow roosts (numbers in these roosts number from 10,000 to 50,000, and one got as large as 150,000) seem to be breaking up

As for my own observations heading down Hwy. 401 from Ingersol area, I noticed every increasing numbers of crows in the farm fields along the expressway as I headed towards Windsor. While there has been recent snow, the days are warm and more and more field is exposed. Some fields must have had over 100 crows in them. Also a large flock of starlings and a few horned larks. At some farms, the cows have been let out into fenced fields near the barns and this attracts birds. Cow manure probably contains lots of undigested grains and material.
