Bald Eagle

Date: 03/06/2010

Number: 1

In a tall tree next to the road I spotted a huge bird. I hit the brakes and luckily had my camera with me. I ran over to the tree, and while taking pictures I heard/saw an adult Bald Eagle behind me fly away. That lead me to assume the bird I was photographing was a fledgling because (I think) eagles are territorial and wouldn't allow a large bird of prey of another species in its territory. The 'fledgling' stayed on its perch for about 10 minutes, keeping its eye on me below it. When it flew away it went in the same direction as the adult, which also meant to me that it was probably its young.
It isn't too uncommon to see Bald Eagles in our area, but I've never seen a fledgling. This was a treat for me, and I will definitely keep my eyes peeled wider from now on.
