Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/10/2010

Number: 1

I took photos of the birds as they settled from flight to branch in clumps in the bare cottonwood trees behind my home. I watched and listened as the birds suddenly took flight with an air sucking whir of wings, then resettled to chatter, go silent, and then the overwhelming whir of their wings. It was just after sunset with the light not quite gone from the sky. The first flash from my camera roused them to flight. After that they were indifferent to the flash. It was a compelling experience. A force of nature. I went to the internet to see where they might be coming from. I ran across this site.
